On Computers and Internet As They Were

All my early encounters with computers were beautiful - so beautiful that it left me with a lifelong penchant (to put it lightly) for all things tech¹.

One of the reasons I absolutely ADORED the internet of yesteryear (other than nostalgia) is the limited access to it. Growing up, we didn't have WiFi (unless it was one of those summer vacations I spent at a place with access to the interwebz). Screen time was shared between multiple people. On a tiny Android with a 3.5 inch screen.

Not having unlimited access to the internet meant that I had to savour every second of access.

I might be misremembering, but it feels like the web was less commercial than it is now? I don't remember ever having adblock until much later in my life. I wasn't constantly hassled to subscribe to services or buy products.
